Year 5 Outline Plan of Work Sept / Oct 2007

Literacy:

Reading:          The children are asked to read regularly every night, reading the same book at home and school.  Book reviews will form part of literacy homework.

Writing:            Looking at characterisation and settings for stories.  Instructional texts.

Spelling:          Learn spellings on the list.  Prefixes, suffixes, plurals, synonyms.  Spelling test on Fridays.

 

Numeracy:

Counting, partitioning, calculating, securing number facts and shape.

Science:

Keeping healthy.  Food types and a balanced diet.  Exercise and how it affects our bodies.  The heart and pulse rate.  Harmful substances.

 

History:

The Victorians.  Create a time line of significant events in Queen Victoria's reign.  Identify the differences between rich and poor with special reference to children.  Use a range of source materials: pictures, photos, artefacts.  Visit to Reading Museum Victorian Schoolroom.

 

Geography:

The study of Chembakolli - a village in India.  Developing map reading skills.

 

Technology:

 

Class 6: Studying the production of food products such as biscuits and pizzas.

 

Music:

Standard music notation - using different rhythms.

Expressing mood and atmosphere through music.

Musical contrast.

Ostinati/layering accompaniment and musical textures.

 

P.E:

Gymnastics: Class 5 Mondays/ Class 6 Thursdays - develop the theme of weight-bearing, using hands, feet and large body parts.  Refine sequences involving rolls and balance.

Games: Both classes Thursdays - Basketball - learning skills and tactics to enjoy this game.

 

Art:

 

Class 5: Investigating and making containers of various forms.

R.E:

Hinduism - looking at the main ideas behind the Hindu religion including its origin, traditions and the belief of one god in many forms.

 

I.C.T:

To improve technological awareness and develop skills in graphical modelling.  To build up confidence in word processing and familiarisation with the keyboard.

 

P.S.H.E:

New beginnings.  Valuing ourselves, making others feel welcome.  Dealing with feelings and emotions.

 

French:

Introducing yourself, classroom commands, colours, numbers 1-6.

Homework:

Reading each evening.  Your child should bring/take his/her book to and from school each day.  Tables and spelling test every week.

Maths and English: Set on Thursday to be in by the following Tuesday.

 

Please check your child's homework diary regularly and sign it at the end of each week.

 

Notes:

Kit should be brought to school on Monday and taken home for washing on Friday!  Please keep art overalls in school all the time.
