Mathematics
The key learning objectives for Year 5 are listed below, but each child will progress towards these at their own rate.
· Explain what each digit represents in whole numbers and decimals with up to two places, and partition, round and order these numbers
· Use knowledge of place value and addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers to derive sums and differences and doubles and halves of decimals (e.g. 6.5 ± 2.7, half of 5.6, double 0.34)
· Use efficient written methods to add and subtract whole numbers and decimals with up to two places
· Read and plot coordinates in the first quadrant; recognise parallel and perpendicular lines in grids and shapes; use a set-square and ruler to draw shapes with perpendicular or parallel sides
· Draw and measure lines to the nearest millimetre; measure and calculate the perimeter of regular and irregular polygons; use the formula for the area of a rectangle to calculate the rectangle's area
· Construct frequency tables, pictograms and bar and line graphs to represent the frequencies of events and changes over time
Each child is expected to learn their times tables which will be tested every Monday morning.
Literacy
Writing: We will be looking at writing in paragraphs and correctly punctuating speech. We will also be exploring narrative poetry, dramatic conventions, stories from other cultures and myths and legends.
Spelling : Each child receives a half-termly list of spellings. Scientific ‘sound’ words, homonyms and prefixes are among the words covered in the first half of term, followed by suffixes and maths vocabulary in the second. Spelling tests are on Fridays.
Science
This term’s science topics are:
Sound – how are sounds made and how they travel; looking at how sounds can be changed and the materials that block sounds.
Life Cycles – studying the life cycles of plants and animals including humans. Pollination, germination and seed dispersal. Development of humans from birth to adulthood including sex education and personal hygiene. We have arranged for the school nurse to come in to cover this topic and parents will be invited to preview the video used with children.
History
We will be looking at the history of the local area (Crowthorne), including how and why change has happened and the impact on modern life.
Design & Techology
We will be designing, making and evaluating musical instruments to accompany our rainforest work. Each class will also have a visit from the chef this term to prepare food in the kitchen (help needed!).
Geography
Our topic is ‘rainforests’. We will be looking at the global distribution of rainforests and their importance in our daily lives.
Religious Education
Together with our literacy topic about stories from other cultures, we will be exploring the significance and meaning of creation stories from a variety of religions.
Mondays Games: Hockey – learning skills and tactics to enjoy this game
Thursdays Dance – exploring and enjoying a wide variety of dances from different times and cultures.
Please name all items of PE kit which should be brought into school on Monday and taken home on Friday.
We will be exploring camouflage in nature and making properties and costumes for our end of term production about rainforests.
Examining Musical Contrasts: loud/soft, long/short, fast/slow, thick/thin texture. Sing and play music in 2 or more parts. Chord structure. Music notation: standard notation on the stave.
French
This term we will learn numbers up to 100 and begin to use adjectives, such as colour, to describe les animaux. We will begin to recognise the gender of French nouns and how some sounds are spelled.
PSHE
To establish a successful learning environment, we will be thinking about good behaviour in the school and classroom. Our units of study will be ‘Going for Goals’ and ‘Good to Be Me’.
Homework
In addition to our weekly spellings and times tables, 30 minutes of maths and 30 minutes of literacy will be set every Thursday; to be handed in the following Tuesday.
Children should read for 20 minutes every night and be heard by an adult at least once a week.
Over half term and into the second half, the children will be asked to work on a ‘rainforest’ project (details will be provided later). No literacy homework will be set during this time.
Please check your child’s homework diary regularly and sign it at the end of each week.
